EFCA, the European Federation of Concrete Admixture Associations, was formed in 1984. It currently represents the National admixture associations of 10 countries with a total membership that is thought to provide in excess of 80% of admixture sales within Europe and represents all the major admixture manufacturers. The Federation initially focused on European Standardisation work for admixtures, leading to the publication of the EN 934 series of standards. This was undertaken by the EFCA Technical Committee.
During the last 10 years the EFCA TC has placed increasing emphasis on promoting the use of admixtures as a normal and essential ingredient of high quality, durable concrete. Admixtures are seen as the key to many innovative developments such as 'Self-Compacting Concrete' that will maintain concrete as a modern and sustainable construction material.
EFCA recognises that the use of admixtures raises environmental concerns and has taken proactive steps to address these issues. The EFCA Environmental Task Group has undertaken research into the fate of the main admixtures over the whole life cycle, published Environmental Product Declarations for admixtures, produced comprehensive advice for its members on harmonised safety data sheets and instigated a 'Seal of Environmental Quality' for individual admixtures.
EFCA works closely with other European concrete associations including ERMCO, BIBM and CEMBUREAU and is actively involved in working on new legislation including REACH and the mandates on 'Construction Products in contact with Drinking Water' and on 'Dangerous Regulated Substances'. EFCA is also a member of CEPMC and of EFCC in order to further its representation in European legislative activities that may cover the use of admixture.
